Some of my mentees found their careers when I told them to “double down on their niche” after discovering a unique aspect of their content.
Content creators have to be very specific about what they are known for.
You can’t be generic because you will have a hard time getting attention. Specificity ensures that you are the only next best option in that niche. I’ve built my career around this, and so have my mentees.
Here are five ways to discover your niche.
-
Share all of your ideas
Begin by creating content around topics and ideas that interest you most. Don’t limit yourself. Get all those ideas out of your head. -
Analyze feedback to identify patterns
Share your creations to get feedback. Take the time to ask people about what they liked and disliked about your work. Identify common patterns in their responses. For example, “You have great content on self-development for teens.” When you hear that from many people, it is a clear first sign that you should pay attention to. -
Create around specific patterns
Focus your content creation on these recurring patterns. Get more feedback. Try to improve further. This is where you try to find specific patterns in feedback. For example, “Self-development for teens with ADHD.” -
Claim your niche
Once you recognize a recurring pattern in feedback consistently, you own that niche. Show people you are the expert in that area. Double down and claim that niche. For example: “Hi, I’m Prashant; I write about self-development for teens with ADHD.” Now that’s what sets you apart. You have carved out a niche for yourself by going two levels deep. When someone is asked who is the best in that very specific area of expertise, your name should pop up everywhere.
Once you have claimed and marked your territory around these niches, move on to your next area of interest.
You can apply this same formula to get attention for whatever you are doing. If you want to play the long game, you should double down on your niche.
This keeps you from fading in the long run as well as building your skills, expertise, and reputation.
