We often become saturated in our field of expertise.
We end up messing up our creation when we get stuck.
Here’s something that has always helped me get unstuck.
Learn from industries outside of your own.
Read books, watch videos, and listen to podcasts about topics that are completely foreign to you.
It opens up a new way of thinking. It gets you curious.
As a result, you will see the problems in front of you with a new perspective.
In my experience, serendipitous moments often occur when you consume content beyond your field of expertise. Learning a new thing results in seeing the world differently. Since you consumed something unrelated to your craft, your mind opened up a new channel for attention and retention.
You are forced to think differently. Just reading a line from a book or watching someone speak can spark a solution or idea for improving what you’re doing. There are times when it might take a few hours of reading and a few days of deep consumption for you to untangle and uncover new ideas.
It is important not to become self-absorbed and overly immersed in your craft.
Whenever I was stuck for ideas for a music score, I watched an episode of MasterChef. When I was overwhelmed by anxiety and self-doubt, reading a line from a business book gave me a boost of confidence. I have always found this to be effective. Simply invest your time in something that is uncomfortable or unfamiliar to you. You’ll be amazed at what you discover. Eventually, this will lead to your becoming better at your craft.
