Bombay March 12 Background Score Completed
I was introduced to Babu Janardhan by Lijo on the sets of City Of God back in December 2010. He was really amazed at how the soundtrack had shaped up for City Of God, which was scripted by him. We discussed a few films, shared our music likes and parted. Later in January he said he has a film for which he would want me to score the background music for, and the songs will be done by his long time friend Afzal Yousuff.
Only a fornight ago I saw the rushes of the film and was really impressed with Babu Janardhan’s story telling. Like all his stories, these little characters take the narrative ahead and makes way for a interesting climax. I was initially apprehensive about scoring for the film after learning how sensitive it is and given there is a superstar the music would demand a commercial tone. But Babu Janardhanan was kind enough to let me come up with my sound. An unheard of freedom for composers in the Malayalam industry!
After working on a few templates over a few days, I decided on a template that really set the tempo of the film. Last night in Trivandrum, I wrapped up the score of this film for which I was really fortunate to be a part of. Babu Janardhan’s now good friend director Lijo was also there whilst the score was given its finishing touches. It was enlightening to be in midst of creative minds envisioning each scene differently, giving scope for an interesting score.
The film is definitely set to grip the audiences with some amazing performances by Mammootty and newbie Unni. Also there is a surprise package in the film in the form of a villian! Never a fan of Mammootty, I loved him in this pivotal role of his career. With its provocative storyline, gripping script, slick editing by Vijay Sankar and formulatic direction by Babu Janardhan, the films’ set to be a hard hitting one. As for the score, I loved working on the score and am really happy the way it’s shaped up.
